The
Friday the 13th films
Kane as Jason Gallery
The Friday the 13th films
In the previous Friday the 13th movies, Jason was portrayed as another
zombie-like psycho killer and although fans kept coming back for more and
still enjoyed the movies, there was just something missing. Then in
Jason Lives -part VI things started to improve. Jason (played by C.J. Graham)
was much more predator-like and more menacing than we had seen before and up to that point, C.J. was the best Jason we fans had seen...that is until
Kane Hodder came along. When Kane put on the mask, he took Jason to a whole
new level and recruited a slew of new fans to the Friday the 13th
movies. Kane portraying Jason Voorhees was not only a stroke of luck for
him, but for Jason as well.
Below is some behind-the-scene info on the F13 movies with Kane Hodder as
Jason Voorhees.
The New Blood -part 7
|
-
Kane put on the hockey mask for the first time and made his debut as Jason
Voorhees in The New Blood. Unlike the previous F13
films, Jason was going to get knocked around in this one when he meets up
with a girl that has telekinesis powers, so it was best to cast Kane, who
was a stuntman,
for the part.
-
The film is actually one of the goriest of the F13 films, but
thanks to the censors (who did more hacking than Jason) all the "good stuff"
had to be edited out. Hopefully one day the unrated version will be
released. It was also the last "old school" style Friday the 13th movie.
While shooting the scene when the porch roof
collapses on top of Jason, the porch was built using balsa and
real wood, and then rigged up to simulate a nasty crash. Well, it looked
nasty all right because things didn't go as expected and Kane ended up
really getting crushed when the porch came down on him. Luckily, the hockey
masked actually protected Kane's face, but it did leave a little black mark
on the mask that can be spotted in some of the scenes.
Kane spent hours underwater in a pool to shoot
the scenes of Jason tied to a rock and he was actually held down by a cable
which prevented him from swimming to the surface to get air. In order for
Kane to get his breath, he would signal a scuba diver to give him oxygen
from the regulator. Kane also couldn't close his mouth completely due to the
prosthetic make-up which made holding his breath underwater difficult.
The fire stunt was rather tricky and one of
Kane's personal favorites. They wanted to ignite Kane on camera, so they
rigged the furnace to spit out a blast of
flames to set Kane on fire. Kane was then completely engulfed for about
30-40 seconds, making it one of the longest full body burns recorded at the
time.
Originally there was a different ending to
this movie. After Jason was pulled into the lake by Tina's father, the closing scene shows a
fisherman in a boat catching a fish and after wrestling it into the boat,
Jason pops out of the water and pulled the fisherman in. The production felt
that this ending was too similar to part 1 and had the scene cut out.
Jason Takes Mahattan -part 8
|
-
The production felt that they couldn't keep pulling the same
rabbit out of the same hat much longer, so they decided to go in a different
direction, which was to add a little humor and take Jason out of his
environment and put him in the least expected place....New York City.
-
Even though it's called Jason Takes Manhattan,
majority of the movie took place on a small cruise ship, because New York
City turned out to be too expensive of a location to shoot a movie. The
production could only afford to film in New York for two days and the rest
was shot in Vancouver.
One of Kane’s most memorable and fun
experiences was during the shooting of Jason Takes
Manhattan. Usually there aren’t any bystanders around on the
set of a F13 film, but filming in Manhattan was a different story. While
on the set in Time Square, Kane had a large crowd of onlookers gawking at
him, so he never took off the mask so as to keep a mystique with the
Jason character, but every once in awhile Kane would look over at the crowd and
tilt his head in a Jason-fashion and the crowd went nuts.
For the scene when Jason vomits water, that
was not a trick shot or special effects. Kane actually drank about a gallon
of water and threw up on cue.
Many F13 fans complained that there were a lot of weird and
unexplained little scenarios that didn't make sense in this movie. The biggest "What the...?!" in the whole movie was
when Jason turned into a little boy and laid dead in a sewer. Paramount had
decided to kill off Jason for good and end the series, but then they turned
around sold the rights to
New Line.
Jason Goes To Hell -part 9
|
-
New Line picked up the
rights and brought Jason back from his suppose death in the New York sewers and
put out Jason Goes to Hell. Since Paramount isn't really a "horror
movie" production and never really appreciated Jason, the F13 fans were expecting
great things from New Line, but instead we got the worse Jason movie made.
-
What F13 fans didn't like most about this movie was, of
course, that Jason was barely in it.
What was meant to be a unique idea of having Jason absent for most of the
movie ended up backfiring.
-
Throughout the whole movie, the actual Jason was only in it for a total of
7 minutes.
-
Kane had a cameo appearance in the film as a security guard.
-
While shooting one of the opening scenes in the movie, Jason's intended victim was
suppose to run out of the cabin, around her car and into the woods. Jason
wasn't in that particular shot, but Kane decided to have some fun and hid
behind the door of the cabin and just as they yelled action, he lunged at
her and roared. Julie Michaels, the stuntwoman/actress, said Kane really startled
her and that she ran like hell and jumped over the car and not around it.
-
There was an alternate ending with this film that involved Jason being
crucified by the demons before being pulled down into Hell. Understandably,
this alternate scene was judge too controversial and was not used.
-
Because of all the talk of a Jason vs. Freddy movie, for a joke the director
had Freddy's glove (played by Kane) pop out of the ground and grab Jason's
mask. What was also meant to be a joke was the Evil Dead book in the
Voorhees house, which then triggered off the idea of a Freddy vs. Jason vs.
Ash movie.
Jason X -part 10
|
-
Jason X was the biggest budget F13 movie
made in
the whole series.
-
Kane's favorite of the F13 movies was part 7,
but he now holds this one as his favorite and considers it to be the best
made Jason movie.
-
This film holds the record for most
kills in the shortest amount of time in any F13 movie: 7 deaths in less than three minutes into the movie.
-
During the scene when Jason kills Dallas,
played by the film's writer Todd Farmer, a stunt double was used when Jason
smashed his face against the wall. Fortunately for Todd Farmer he didn't do
that particular shot, because the stuntman actually broke his nose on the
wall.
-
When Uber-Jason entered the virtual reality
world that looked like Crystal Lake, the original idea was that Jason would
see his mother drowning in the lake calling to him for help. There were then two
ideas of what was to happen next: the director Jim Isaac, wanted Jason
to go in the water and rescue his mother only to realize that she was fake,
but the writer Todd Farmer, wanted the "darker" Uber-Jason to actually drown
his mother because he was so far gone from his former self and was evil
enough to kill his own mother. Well, the scene never happened because they
couldn't get Betsy Palmer to play the virtual reality mother Voorhees.
-
For the first time some thoughts of comfort
was in mind in designing the costumes of both Jason & Uber-Jason. Kane
remarked that
out of all the movies he made as Jason, he was the most comfortable in this
one.
-
The MPAA was surprisingly lenient regarding
the death scenes in Jason X, so therefore the kills didn't require much editing.
The MPAA found the "kill" scenes well-done and appropriate to the story and not
just gory and gruesome to gross out the viewers.
-
Jason X got mixed reviews by F13 fans
-some
really enjoyed it and liked the change and then others were disappointed
and miss the "old school" Friday the 13th movies.
