About Kane Hodder
Born in Auburn, California and growing up in Kwajalein (Marshall
Islands), Kane return to America and resided in Reno, Nevada. After Kane
graduating from the University of Nevada Reno, Kane didn’t want to get
stuck with a run of the mill 9 to 5 job, so he decided to first pursue a
longtime ambition of his and that was to work in the stunt profession.
Kane always had an interest in stunt work and as a teen he would shock
his friends with his daring exploits. He worked at one time in a live
stunt show in Reno, but he knew if he was going to make it in the
business, he needed to head out to Hollywood.
Despite a very competitive field and not having family in the
business to pave the road for him, Kane’s assertiveness and patience
paid off. Even a serious and life-threatening mishap during his first year in the business
couldn’t discourage him from the stunt profession. While doing a stunt
that required Kane’s body to be completely engulfed in flames, he was
badly burned and the injury left him with over half his body scarred.
What would’ve rattled a lesser person from ever doing another fire gag
again or getting out of the business altogether, Kane got right back on
the horse and now specializes in fire stunts and even takes time to work
with children in burn centers. Although a thankless and dangerous job,
almost 30 years later as a stuntman and stunt coordinator, Kane couldn’t
imagine doing anything else.
Aside from risking life
and limb doing stunts, Kane also had a few small acting roles and
earned a reputation for working well under heavy prosthetic make-up. These factors would then lead him to a role that would make Kane Hodder
a worldwide celebrity.
Paramount was doing
another Friday the 13th movie, The New Blood (part 7), and
director and special effects artist, John Buechler, had a good idea who
would make the perfect Jason. John had
worked with Kane before on the movie Prison and pushed to have Kane hired.
Not only can Kane work in awkward and uncomfortable prosthetic make-up,
as he did in Prison, but as a stuntman he could do all his own
stunts. Since there would be a lot of stunt work involved with the Jason
character in part 7, hiring Kane would be to the production’s advantage
because they wouldn’t need to hire both a stuntman and an actor to play
Jason –Kane could easily do both. With Kane now behind the hockey mask,
Jason Voorhees wasn’t just a characterless killer anymore, but he was
both physically and mentally more intimidating. Unable to act with voice
or facial expressions, Kane only had body movement and “one eye” to work
with, so he came up Jason’s signature moves and mannerisms, and he did
it so effectively you could actually see the look of annoyance to sheer
rage from Jason through the mask. So it’s no wonder everyone from the
production to the longtime Friday the 13th fans thought, “Yep….that’s
the Jason we’ve been waiting for.”
After his debut in The
New Blood, Kane reprised the role of Jason in three more F13 movies,
but despite his popularity with the fans and putting his heart and soul
into the character more than any other actor before him (and now after),
Kane was denied the role in Freddy vs. Jason. But no matter who
else is behind the hockey mask and picks up the machete, Kane Hodder is
still the quintessential Jason Voorhees we’ll ever see.
Since Jason X, Kane
is keeping himself busy doing what he loves. When he’s not beating up
Ben Affleck’s father in the movie Daredevil, making cameo
appearances in other horror movies, and working as the
stunt coordinator on Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Reject, Kane is
appearing at conventions around the world and meeting with fans. Although an intimidating figure on screen,
fans who have met Kane find
him to be very amiable and down to earth.
We may not see Kane back again as Jason
Voorhees anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see him again
hacking people up. Next on Kane’s agenda is playing Victor Crowley in
the horror film Hatchet, and you guessed it –he plays the killer.
For Your Information
Due to his
height and bulk as a stuntman, Kane often gets stunt-related acting
roles (usually as the villain) and now after getting celebrity status as
Jason Voorhees, Kane is often offered cameo appearances as well,
such as in Pumpkinhead II
and Wishmaster,
and the recent The Last Horror
Picture Show
and 2001 Maniacs.
In his spare time
Kane likes to read, hike, play with his kids, and hit the gym. He usually
doesn’t do anything too wild on his days off because he does enough of that
at work.
Kane’s all time favorite movie is
The Exorcist.
As an experience
stuntman, Kane holds fire gags as the most dangerous: “ Some
of the most difficult stunts to do are fire stunts. I sit here with burn
scars over half of my body because of a stunt that went bad but I ended up
specializing in fire stunts. I've done them as Jason, I've done them in
other movies. Fire is very unpredictable. That's why I was burned, because
it did something that I never would've dreamed that it would do. When you're
completely engulfed in flames, the key is to get put out at the correct time
because even though they can put the fire out, you can still get burned
because of the heat radiating inward from where the fuel was. You can keep
getting hotter and hotter even after the flames are out so it's a tricky
thing to time."
Some of Kane’s
favorite music is ICP and Rob Zombie. Kane was fortunate enough to work with
his favorites by being the stunt driver in ICP’s
Another Love Song
video and the stunt coordinator for Zombie’s movie
The Devil’s Reject.
Kane has an interest
in haunted buildings or places, and every chance he gets when he’s away on
location he likes to check out the local haunted sites.
While on the set of
a Jason movie and in costume and make-up, Kane has a little fun scaring
people by pretending to be a dummy. He usually has an accomplice that
encourages unsuspected victims to get close to the “Jason dummy” and touch
it, only to have Kane come to life and scare the bejeebies out of them.
Some of Kane’s favorite kills in the
F13 movies is the sleeping bag scene in part 7, the boxer getting his head
punched off in part 8, and the female scientist getting her face
crystallized and then smashed on the counter in part 10.
Kane likes
to give as much creative input as possible to enhance a scene, which makes
his portrayal of Jason and other villains so ominous. For example in
Jason X, when Jason grabs one
of the characters and breaks his neck, instead of the usual quick snap, it
was Kane’s idea to twist the head slowly while the victim struggled until
his neck popped and cracked to give it a more gruesome effect.
When playing Jason and just before a
physical scene, Kane practices a little method acting by pacing and
growling, and keeping a distance from the actors, so as they don’t get too
relaxed around him. He does this not only to get himself pumped up, but to
unnerve the actors and have them thinking he’s a little nuts, so when Kane
does a violent or kill scene with them, there’s a bit of an intimidation
factor which helps the actor's performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
I read somewhere Kane was born in Chicago
in 1951 and then somewhere else it was Auburn in 1955. Which is it?
There's been false
information put out on the web regarding Kane's birth place and date. By
Kane's own account (and he should know better than anyone else), it’s
Auburn, California on April 8, 1955.
When did Kane
start doing stunts?
From my
understanding, Kane became a stuntman in his early twenties and has now been
working in the busy for almost 30 years.
Does Kane really do all his own stunts?
Yes. Kane is an
experience stuntman and because he can do his own stunts he gets a lot of
acting roles that are stunt-related. Although on one occasion in Jason X,
Kane was asked to sit out a wire stunt and it wasn’t because he couldn’t do
the gag, but because at that point Kane was too important to the production
to risk injury. If there’s no Kane, there’s no Jason, which means there’s no
movie.
How did Kane get
the job of Jason Voorhees?
John Buechler was
the director of F13 part 7 and recommended Kane Hodder. John had worked with
Kane before and knew how well Kane performs in awkward and uncomfortable
prosthetic make-up. Of course, Kane being a stuntman was a big bonus too.
Since there would be a lot of stunt work involved with the Jason character
in part 7, hiring Kane would be to the production’s advantage because they
wouldn’t need to hire both a stuntman and an actor to play Jason –Kane could
easily do both. After doing such an impressive job as Jason Voorhees, Kane
was asked back.
Why wasn’t Kane
in Freddy vs. Jason?
It certainly wasn’t because Kane didn’t want to do it. A matter of fact, he
couldn’t wait to kick Freddy's butt. To Kane’s surprise, the production just
dropped him out of the blue and put out a casting call to replace him.
Ouch…talk about a knife in the back. The production’s lame excuses were
Kane was too tall, too short, or they wanted someone with more sensitive
eyes or moved more gracefully, blah, blah, blah. There were even rumors put
out to justify their actions that Kane was difficult to work with or wanted
more money -all of which is not true. Frankly, in my opinion, I think
it’s because the filmmakers wanted to make a wimp out of Jason, so they
needed an actor who wouldn’t protest on how Jason was going to be portrayed.
On the other hand, Kane cares how Jason is perceived and would never make a
pussy out of him or make Jason appear weak. I think the director Ronny Yu
knew that, so that’s probably why he didn’t want Kane as Jason. Well,
whatever the ridiculous reason, it was a poor decision on their part and now
thanks to the filmmakers of Freddy vs. Jason, they took one of the
greatest slashers of horror film history, after a reign of over 20 years and
ten films, and turned him into a clumsy characterless goon who looks more
like Herman Munster with a hockey mask than an invincible killing machine.
Despite the fans cries for the return of Kane Hodder, there are no plans of
Kane reprising his role as Jason in the possible Freddy vs. Jason
sequel.
